Well it's good to be back again. This time I'm in Panama - as in the Canal. Since my last visit I have come upon a considerable amount of information during a recent fact finding trip (kinda like congress except you didn't pay for it :-) to Northeast PA - Carbondale, Forest City, Susquehanna and other small towns. There I traced facts back to the original Tormey in my direct line that came to the US - my gggrandfather. As a result I've located a an immediate cousin of my father who he never knew. Their parents were siblings, they spoke of the same people and were even at the same family reunion when the were children. And get this, they're both retired in Florida and only live about 30 miles apart - it is indeed a small world.

Thank you Michael a really good website nearly all my father's family are dead but I have been able to collect bits and pieces. My father's name Peter and he lived in Kells, Co. Meath where there are Tormey's living for the past 100 years Gillaiosa O'Tormaigh. Bishop of Ardagh from 1232-1237 was of sufficient importance to be mentioned by nearly all annalists. Ref. to the name in the Elizabethan Fiants relate to O'Reilly and Nugent country in Cavan and Westmeath and modern statistics place it in the area running eastward from Granard in Longford.

my grandfather, b circa 1898 in Richland Center, WI then went to possible the Dakotas, then Montana and finally to Yakima WA in 1924. Died Jan.. 17, 1958 in Yakima. married to Georgia Alice Cunningham whose family can be traced back to Engelstorp, Krnstad Sweden. They had three children; my mother Dolores Margaret Tormey- now of Seattle, WA, Robert W. Tormey, father of Lance Tormey of Yakima, and Thomas Tormey died a few weeks after birth. "Frank" had two sisters, Florence Tormey Maxwell (husband Frank) of Big Sandy Montana, children Tom and Kathy(sp?); Irene Tormey and Bernice Tormey both of Seattle WA - I'm told one of them was quite educated spoke to women's groups and went to Japan as missionary never married; James Tormey of Seattle and buried in Ho y Rood Cemetery. Their father - name unknown also lived at the end of his life in Seattle and supposedly was a railroad man. I tried to trace my grandfather through his military service of WWI but all the records had been destroyed in a fire and since w do not know his exact date of birth or his father or mother's name s I don't know how to hook this to the other Tormeys who were in Wisconsin. Found your site, Michael, excellent. Hope someone can help me out and direct me to the next step in this who-dun-it! Oh yes, Michael, my mother is sending me large article from our local paper here in Contra Costa County re Patrick Tormey's California family. It seems very thorough and so you probably have already seen this research by them.

Great idea- didn't know there where that many Tormey's out there.  I am 50 years old, born in Teaneck, NJ-lived for 21 years in Dumont NJ -settled in Maryland in 1970 My father - Thomas Joseph Tormey b.1907 d,1982 .  He married Loretta Counihan in 1934 - bo th born and raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn New York. Loretta Counihan Tormey, b.1911, is still alive and doing well in Hudson, FL.  My older brother Barton Thomas Tormey lives in New Port Richey, FL.  All of his four children live near by.  My older sister Cathe rine Tormey Bowen passed away in 1993- she settled in North Whales, PA.  My younger sister Jane Tormey Biscardi lives in Bergenfield NJ with her two daughters living close by.  I married Rosemarie Lastella of Dumont NJ in 1970 - we have two children and one granddaughter living nearby in Aberdeen, MD.

Very nice site, you have done a wonderful job. Just thought you might be interested in this: I grew up in a small town called Crockett, CA which is about 35 NW of S.F. There was a very small town (pop. around 100 at the most) next to us called Tormey. If remember correctly, the Selby Smelting plant owned almost all the houses there for their employees to live, so when the plant closed down everyone moved and they sold and moved the houses out of their. My mother has told me that Grace Tormey, her grandmother, came from Ireland. She assumes it was because of the potato famine and that she came with family, a brother named Donald (possibly) was one of them. The brother married a woman named Althea. Grac e married Edmund Joseph Nitsche. Grace and Edmund had 4 children: Ruth Helen, Kathlene, Richard Edmund (12-5-1912), and Margaret. Grace had a bad heart and died young. This website is an excellent source for Tormey research and a boon to us all. Michael has introduced us to one another and provided us with links for communication and historical background. Irish research is not easy, but there are many ways to learn about the origins of our families, and I believe that if we can go back far enough, we will find that all the Tormeys, Tormys. and Tormays are connected. My gr-gr-grandfather James Tormey leased 39 acres which contained a corn mill in Derrynagaragh (or Dernegarah) in County Westmeath. One of his sons, my gr-grandfather Laurence married Bridget Wilson and was a shopkeeper in Castlepollard until the family emigrated about 1869 and lived in New York City, and later in Brooklyn. A daughter, Catherine died at 25 in Staten Island, and a son John was also in NYC at the time of her death. Another son, Edward, married Jane Gillick and became the lessee of the farm and the mill. Edward and Jane had several children and I don't know yet whether they stayed on in Ireland or also emigrated.

I am delighted to discover that so many Tormeys are interested in tracing our noble roots. As indicated, I have been at this pursuit for over 3 decades but have been unable to close the informational gap between Ireland and the U.S. But I have made marvel ous friends during the process, both here at home and in Ireland. My wife and I visited Tyrrellspass, West Meath last summer and met, for the first time, Brigid (Dunne) Tormey with whom I have been corresponding since 1978.  My efforts and interest have inc reased enormously as a result of having been contacted by Marybeth Tormey Stevens a few years ago. She had seen my name in the Irish Echo's Jim Lowney column. She is a treasure trove of information as is evident from scanning the various guest book entries. I would be pleased to hear from other TORMEYS as I would be pleased to pass on any information from my files.

Through the help of Marybeth Stevens and family members I was able to establish about 200 relatives. John Tormey with brother Patrick came from Westmeath and settle in what is now Contra Costa, Ca. Marybeth has located a couple of generations back in Irelan d. If anyone wants her e-mail just ask as she is an expert following many of the east coast Tormey's. Her latest find was there were seven brothers with seven mills hence the saying where ever there is a Tormey there is a Mill.

My great-great-grandfather, James Joseph Tormaigh (Tormey), arrived off Boston Harbor July 4, 1847, with his father, six surviving brothers and one sister, Bridget. They traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, (the frontier) to join an older son, Nick, who had arr ived in 1835.
